What do you think of the relationship between Thomas and Victor?
Thomas and Victor have completely opposite personalities, styles and demeanor. There seems to be a division between them. Thomas is smiley and likes to tell stories. Victor is hard and keeps to himself. There also seems to be an animosity that Victor has towards Thomas and it seems to be the fact the Victor thinks his father didn’t go into the burning house to look to rescue him but did go in to save Thomas.
The two young men venture to pick up ashes of Victor’s father after his passing. After Victor talks with his father’s “companion”, he finds a way to forgive his father for leaving him and his mother when he was a young boy. The car accident they are in also has a part in changing Victor’s attitude. Victor finds himself doing thing that his father did such as cutting his hair. This forgiveness he learns, prompts him to also patch things up with Thomas. The two young men who have been somewhat friends since they were young realize that they both grew up without fathers whether that father had a choice of being there or not. What parents do and treat their children stays with them for a long time, if not for the rest of their lives.
Isn't it amazing that the same man was seen so differently by the boys. Thomas may have seen only good in Victor's father because he saved him so not matter waht he did, he wasled on water. Victor however only seen the man that was a loser and beat him and his mother. Victor never remembered about the basketball games that they played or anyother thing that they may have done togheter.
ReplyDeleteBoth boys lost their fathers and still came out so differently.One so angery and negative and the ohter so free spirited and happy. Luckily they completed each other and by the end of the story I think Victor realized how good it was for them to go toghter.
Thomas and Victor certainly have got opposite character, Thomas is calm and easy going character where as Victor is hard headed and mean type of character. The scene of Victor beating up Thomas when he asked victor that if his dad does not love him and left him, is the scene where dislike of victor towards Thomas was shown. But their relation grew stronger in the journey. They were the kids growing up in the reservation and their relation was brought together by Victor’s father, Arnold. Arnold was the one who saved Thomas form fire even though he was the one who started it. Thomas was orphan and Arnold who used to take him around for food etc. became his father figure. That’s why he wanted to join Victor for the journey to collect his father’s ashes. Their relation is most ly about care and forgiveness.
