This is what it means to say Phoenix, Arizona

What’s one difference between this reading and the movie version?  How does the change affect the story, change the meaning and/or alter our perspectives of the characters?

One significant difference between the movie and the reading was the situation and surrounding that Victor and Thomas found when they arrived in Phoenix, Arizona. In the movie, they arrived at the trailer to find a “friend” of Victor’s father and Victor was able to have some valuable conversations with her to discover that his father was remorseful for what had transpired and that he loved his son very much. In the reading, they arrived at the trailer that smelled of decomposition and Victor was only able to find a stereo and some photos to keep for him.

This changes the affect of the story as respects to Victor and how he was able to deal with his negative feelings toward his father. In the movie, by him learning how his father felt toward him and how sorry he was helped Victor to forgive his father and overcome some of those negative feelings that he had bottled up inside for years. Resentment can burden a person’s soul, so it was great to see the movie give Victor’s character the release that he needed.

  1. Hi Mandy,
I felt like you took the words right out of my mouth. I could not agree with you more!! Think that the book left out the best part and that was Victor conversation with Suzy!! I think Victor finding out that his dad loved him very much and was so sorry for what he did is what helped him to move past what had happen and to forgive. I think it also helped him to be able to get to that bridge and let his father go and be able to move on with his life. So thank you so much for sharing, I loved reading that you felt the same way.

  2. I think you did an excellent job on explaining the differences. That's something I didn't think about, that the story left Victor unable to deal with his negative feelings toward the situation. The more I read these the more i realize the only better thing to me about the story was the relationship that the characters could share with the readers, I mean its obvious in the movie as well but theres something about the story that gives you a little more detail about themselves and individuals. I don't like how the story left out the parts arriving to the trailer and how Victors dad even got to Arizona and why he left so the movie does a much better job at explaining some of these things.

  3. Mandy,

I agree, the movie helped victor let go of the anger he felt towards his father. When his father left him, he was still a kid and he wanted him to stay he even cried in the movie. Once suzy, told him how his father wanted to go back but never really had the courage to, he realized that his father was always thinking of him even if he wasn't present. This scene from the film is important and I think it made a difference, because Victor was transformed into a new person after he left the trailer.

  4. This was also the main difference that I found with the movie. I think that it gave more of a meaning to Victor and Thomas's journey to Pheonix. I enjoyed the movie much more than I did the story. I felt that the story was kind of dull and lacking something. The movie made up for it. The movie brought up what the story was lacking just by simply introducing Arnold's friend. She gave Victor something to think about and another way to his view his father, which helped him work through some of the problems that he had had with his father.

  5. Mandy.

I believe they should have shown the scene of were Victor and Thomas found the body in the trailer instead of the neighbor finding it. This would of had a great impact on Victor and Thomas as well as the viewers. The boys should of been involved of a ceremony or the cremation of his fathers body.
